School has started up again and it’s time to start making and delivering buddy packs. If you don’t know about buddy packs, in the last two years we at Faith Des Peres Presbyterian Church have been preparing bags of groceries; enough for breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack for the weekend, which we deliver to students who are on subsidized breakfast and lunch programs through schools. You may not know, but studies have shown that often those students have very little to eat on the weekends.
We have a new school this year, with greater need than our former school. Eight students at Tillman Elementary School have been chosen. The principal is excited to have our involvement.
But we need you! We need to fill several teams of buddy pack volunteers. Mission and Ministry purchases all the food except for the fresh fruit. Teams of approximately 4 people will be asked to pack food into bags. This can be done anytime in advance of a delivery date, but commonly is done the Sunday before the scheduled delivery date. If 3 of the 4 members are present – the entire commitment is approximately 15 minutes. Then one member of the team purchases some fresh fruit to put in the bags, and delivers the bags to the school – usually on a Friday. We would like to have 7 – 8 teams. If we do, the number of times packing will be very manageable – as we deliver every two weeks. Please help us in this endeavor.
If you would like to be a team captain please let us know that. Team captains will be responsible for reminding the team that it is time to pack, determining the pack day and time, and making sure someone on the team can deliver the food. Similarly, if you are frequently available to deliver on a Thursday or Friday during the day (you don’t work that day or you have flexibility in your daytime schedule) please indicate that when you sign up. We want everyone who wants to deliver to the school to be able – and want every team to have at least one person who can usually do so.
