Thanksgiving Meal and Christmas Giving Tree

Sunday, November 21, we’ll enjoy a Thanksgiving Service followed by this year’s DUO Thanksgiving Lunch and Christmas Giving Tree kickoff.

This year, we are adopting 5 families each from Lydia's House and SSDN.  We need you to help purchase toys, clothes, and gift cards to Schnucks and Target for the families.  You will have an opportunity to do this at the Thanksgiving lunch on November 21.

Sign up in the Gathering Space and plan to join us for a turkey dinner with all the fixings and pies.  The Mission and Ministry Committee will provide all the food.  Freewill donations toward the cost of the meal will be accepted at the luncheon.  Invite friends to join us!

Morning Worship, 10:30 am

"Lord, I'm so glad I'm not like (insert name here) . . ."

And so prayed the puffed-up Pharisee to God.  So true confession time, who among us hasn't thanked God at least once in our lives that we aren't like (insert name here)?  It's at times like this that my Mom likes to remind me to "be humble".  Good advice, for sure.  But is that all there is to the story?  Um, I think not.  But to learn more, you'll have to come on Sunday-which I hope you'll do!

Next Sunday (Oct. 31) we'll celebrate Reformation Sunday.  Get ready to post your theses to the church door!  A guest trumpeter will accompany the choir and hymns this Sunday.

On November 7, All Saint's Sunday, we'll recognize those in our congregation who have joined the great communion of saints.

And on November 21, we'll enjoy a Thanksgiving Service followed by this year's Do Unto Others Thanksgiving Lunch and Christmas Giving Tree.

See you in church!

Adult Discussion Group, 9 am

This week the Adult Discussion Group begins its 4 week study of Phyllis Tickle's book "The Great Emergence: How Christianity is Changing and Why".

The Great Emergence refers to a movement currently taking place across Christendom, increasingly known as the “Emerging Church.”  Phyllis Tickle became the founding editor of the Religion Department of Publishers Weekly in 1992.  The Great Emergence is her attempt to put the Emerging Church movement into a coherent context.  Tickle suggests that the church (i.e., Christianity) has gone through “hinge periods” about every five hundred years, during which its adherents sort through their church’s structures, beliefs and practices, trying to make them better fit the world in which they find themselves.  The last such hinge period was the Great Reformation; the Emerging Church, Tickle believes, is the result of a current hinge period.  The Great Emergence is short (under 200 pages), readable, and quite informative.  And, even if you haven't read the book, you can come to the discussion.
